I never ask my son to do things just because I "missed" them in my childhood. For example, I never ask him to play piano, or whatever.
The key is that I still have a lot to achieve in my own life therefore bringing him up is not my "only job". I don't have time to force him to do things that he doesn't like. This approach actually leaves a lot of room for my kid and myself. We are individual, never treat your kids as part of youself.
It is very important that as a parent, never think your kid is your only hope. You have your own life and own dream, what you have to do is to be a role model of your kid and also give them a happy childhood and to make them to be confident and independent. Try to encourage them to read is one of the most important things. If he likes to read, he will know how to establish his life goal earlier. Though the goals may change but it is still important that he has goals at different stages. Just think back how you can become what you are today, never ask your kid to repeat things that you hated at that age.
Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
and though they are with you yet they belong not to you.
You may give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannnot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward not tarries with yesterday.
