Life is an endless long journey. And looking back to the past 5 years since the exciting moment when I knew my immigration application got approved, I still recall the feeling of sorrow that I felt so many nights missing my family and friends that I left behind. But mostly and overall, I am grateful and feel very lucky that I was granted such a wonderful opportunity to come to Canada, where human rights are equally respected and people’s efforts are fairly recognized, regardless of nationality or races. Looking back, I’m thankful to all the kind-hearted people I met. Thanks for their help to make me feel warm in a foreign country, where it is “back-home” to me now, and to make me who I am. In 2005, my family landed in Toronto for a short term visit after our immigration application was approved. We loved Toronto at first glance. The fresh air, green grass, busy streets, nice people, and so much more, it is like a dream come true. But question was whether we could survive after hearing so many unsuccessful stories of immigrants. After returned back to China, I completed the project that I was doing and closed my company. I jumped on the airplane by myself on Jul, 2006, with courage and hope to create a good living condition for my family. And here my journey began. I was confident that I could find a professional job in no time because I had 18 years experience as an Electric, Electronic and Automation Engineer and had worked on some very big projects in China. I did receive some response after sending batches of resumes but the result of the interviews was quite discouraging because I didn’t understand the questions and was not able to present myself properly. After carefully analyzing my situations and evaluating the alternative plans, I decided to go to College for the Automation and Robotic program. This is a 3-year advance diploma program. I clearly knew that I’d put myself in a challenging situation because going back to school could be difficult. Besides, the tuition was too much for a new immigrant. Thanks to the Student Loan program to make everything possible. I was able to concentrate on my study without worrying about how to pay the fees or living expenses. Running at full speed, I was taking 6 courses per semester and 3 semesters per academic year.
In May,2009, 2.5 years after I registered in the program, I obtained my advanced diploma with average GPA of 3.75. At the time when I was about to graduate, the economy was in a downturn and most of manufacture companies were cutting their productions. One week after graduate ceremony, I started job seeking. After sending hundreds of resumes in 3 months, I got 6 interviews and received my 1st offer. I still remember my first day at work. It was a milestone remarking the recognition of my efforts and commitment. One year after, I found my second job as an industrial electrician in xxxx, Inc., an international auto parts manufacturer. In the third interview, I persuaded CEO that I’d be the best electrician that he could ever find. I officially settled down and I am capable to provide my family a reasonably good living condition. At March 2011, I become a citizen of Canada. |
